The urban elective placement is a four to six-week placement which allows students to undertake clinical training in a local healthcare system. The unit is undertaken during the vacation between Year 3 and Year 4 of the Doctor of Medicine (MD) course.<\/dd>\n

Students are able to (1) demonstrate appropriate professional attitudes and behaviours, demonstrate capacity for personal and professional development, apply ethical and medicolegal frameworks; (2) promote and participate in collaborative and patient centred health care, evaluate a local healthcare system; (3) promote good health care for culturally and linguistically diverse patient groups or underserved communities; (4) perform patient assessment, diagnostication and management, communicate effectively with patients, families and other health professionals in a local health environment; (5) apply principles of lifelong learning; and (6) apply principles of evidence-based practice to health issues in a local health environment.<\/dd>\n

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) course is based around six themes of Professional, Leader, Advocate, Clinician, Educator and Scholar. This unit provides teaching in all of these themes within the clinical attachments and related teaching in Year 4 of the MD course. This includes five-week duration clinical placements in emergency medicine, surgery, internal medicine, rural general practice, anaesthesia, oncology, palliative care and an elective placement where students have choices of clinical placement to suit their interests. Students undertake clinical care of patients under the supervision of experienced clinicians in a real clinical environment including ward rounds, operating theatre experience, outpatient clinics, emergency department attachments, community practices and other clinical encounters. Students engage in small group learning sessions to discuss evidence-based practice in related clinical disciplines in hospital and community health contexts. Students are expected to apply the knowledge, skills and professional attitudes gained in context within these clinical rotations.<\/dd>\n

This is an eight-week capstone unit starting in Year 4, Semester 2 in rotation for 240 students at a time and flows through to the end of the year. It consists of two blocks (Transition to Internship, which includes clinical shadowing placements in internal medicine, general surgery and emergency medicine; and, Extension, which is a student choice or remediation attachment). Students are expected to apply the knowledge, skills and professional attitudes gained in previous Phase 1, 2, 3 and 4 learning within their clinical rotations.<\/dd>\n
