We read and write poetry<\/p>\n

because we are members of the human race.<\/p>\n

And the human race is filled with passion.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And medicine, law, business, engineering \u2013<\/p>\n

these are noble pursuits<\/p>\n

and necessary to sustain life.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But poetry, beauty, romance, love<\/p>\n

\u2013 these are what we stay alive for.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To quote from Whitman,<\/p>\n

\u201cO me, O life<\/p>\n

of the questions of these recurring.<\/p>\n

Of the endless trains of the faithless.<\/p>\n

Of cities filled with the foolish.<\/p>\n

What good amid these,<\/p>\n

O me, O life?<\/p>\n

Answer:<\/p>\n

that you are here.<\/p>\n

That life exists<\/p>\n

and identity.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That the powerful play goes on,<\/p>\n
